CONFUCIUS CLASSROOMS: INTEGRATED CHINESE STUDY
The designation of a Confucius Classroom is given, upon application, to a school which teaches Chinese language. The Confucius Classroom is also partnered with a twin school in China. Our Confucius Classroom is supported by the Confucius Institute of Edmonton.
The Confucius Institute in Edmonton provides supports for all of its associated Confucius Classrooms including:
Specialized professional development for Chinese teaching staff
Provision of new resources to support Chinese language instruction
Twinning with a partner school in Shandong Province
Support for joint projects between the school and its partner
Support for HSK language assessment
Staff access to scholarship study in China
Student access to scholarships for summer study in China
Our visiting Chinese teacher, Jitao Deng (or teacher Alex), arrived in October and since then we have hit the road running. He currently visits each classroom once a week and the students are learning about Chinese language and culture. In addition to this, teacher Alex also holds an after school Mandarin class which exposes students to language, writing, cooking, songs and games. In the evenings teacher Alex teaches an advanced class to members of the community who are fluent Mandarin speakers. In this class they focus on writing and reading Mandarin.
Our students were fortunate to have been invited to sing at the Chinese New Year celebrations sponsored by the Canadian Chiness Cultural Society in February. Through our parntership, we are able to access one another's resources. Two after school clubs we were able to offer to interested students was Tai Chi, and now, Fan dancing.
Being a diverse school community, our students are always eager to learn about other cultures.
