(Fort McMurray, AB, May 31, 2018) Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) congratulates Thania Breitkreuz, our Walter and Gladys Hill Public School teacher, who won the coveted Edwin Parr Award from the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA). This is FMPSD’s second Edwin Parr recipient in a row. Last year’s award went to Kristen Craig, École Dickinsfield teacher.

The annual award is given to six outstanding first-year teachers across the province. Breitkreuz won for Zone 2/3. She was in attendance at the banquet in Edmonton on May 25 when the announcement was made.

“I am extremely honoured to be the recipient of the 2018 Edwin Parr Award. Becoming a teacher was always one of my dreams, but I never dreamed of an achievement of this magnitude this early in my career,” noted Breitkreuz, who teaches grade four, and is a graduate of Westwood Community High School (2011).

“I am humbled by the recognition of my work, knowing that this award is so much bigger than me. This achievement is marked by the combination of a lot of people who have contributed to my success and poured into mentoring, guiding, and teaching me,” she continued.

Linda Mywaart, Board Chair, FMPSD, was in attendance for the ceremony. She was delighted with the announcement.

"We are pleased to have a good number of high calibre first-year teachers at FMPSD. We congratulate all the Edwin Parr nominees from our District. Very special congratulations to Thania for the hard work, the innovative teaching and the devotion to her students which makes her a very worthy recipient of the Edwin Parr Award. Special thanks to Walter and Gladys Hill School for giving Thania a place to flourish and for nominating her. All of us at FMPSD celebrate this award with Thania."

Annalee Nutter, Principal, Walter and Gladys Hill Public School nominated Breitkreuz, and was on hand at the event.

“We are so proud of Thania. She truly is deserving given her pedagogical wisdom and the way she implements best practices in the classroom. We are very lucky to have such a high performing first-year teacher who cares about her students and provides excellent instructional methods to help them achieve success,” she noted.

Superintendent Doug Nicholls was also in attendance, and congratulated Breitkreuz on winning.

“Thania goes above and beyond in the classroom, and is involved in after-school activities as well. We are fortunate to have a first-year teacher, who brings so much energy to the District. And, winning back to back Edwin Parr awards speaks to the quality of FMPSD teachers, who are indeed Doing What’s Best for Kids in all they do,” Superintendent Nicholls said.

Congratulations Thania!
